Croatian Armed Forces receive first Bradley infantry fighting vehicles

By Defence Industry Europe

The Croatian Armed Forces have officially received their first four Bradley M2A2 ODS infantry fighting vehicles during a ceremony held at the “132nd HV Brigade” barracks in Našice on 14 January 2025. The vehicles are part of a significant donation from the United States government, comprising a total of 89 Bradleys, with 62 set to be refurbished for operational use.

The ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Ivan Anušić, who highlighted the importance of the acquisition for Croatia’s defence capabilities. Anušić noted that Croatia has reached the NATO commitment of allocating 2% of its GDP to defence spending, with 29% dedicated to modernisation efforts, exceeding the alliance’s minimum target of 20%.

The partnership between Croatia and the United States has facilitated not only the procurement of Bradley vehicles but also other advanced systems, including Black Hawk helicopters and HIMARS rocket launchers. Anušić expressed gratitude to U.S. Ambassador Nathalie Rayes for her efforts in strengthening defence cooperation between the two nations, describing the collaboration as a cornerstone of Croatia’s modernisation strategy.

The Bradley M2A2 ODS vehicles are being refurbished by the Croatian company Đuro Đaković Special Vehicles in Slavonski Brod. To date, eight vehicles have been restored, with four delivered for training purposes and four more expected by the end of January. Certified instructors from BAE Systems are conducting maintenance and operator training, with the aim of preparing 48 mechanics and vehicle operators by March 2025.

U.S. Ambassador Nathalie Rayes praised Croatia’s dedication to NATO objectives and highlighted the strategic importance of the defence partnership. “The arrival of the Bradley vehicles strengthens not only Croatia’s defence capabilities but also its collective contribution as a reliable NATO member,” she said. Rayes also acknowledged the symbolic and practical value of the growing U.S.-Croatia defence relationship.

The total financial value of the Bradley acquisition is $196.4 million, with $51.2 million provided as U.S. government assistance and the remaining costs covered by Croatia over five years. The delivery of all 89 vehicles is scheduled for completion by 2026, marking a key step in modernising Croatia’s Armed Forces and enhancing its operational readiness within the NATO alliance.
