European Union extends EUMAM Ukraine training mission by two years

By Defence Industry Europe

The Council of the European Union has officially extended the mandate of the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) for an additional two years, continuing until 15 November 2026. This extension comes with a substantial budget allocation of nearly EUR 409 million to support Ukraine's defence efforts from 14 November 2024 to the new end date.

EUMAM Ukraine remains a pivotal element of the EU’s military support for Ukraine, aiming to boost the military capabilities of Ukraine’s Armed Forces. Since its establishment in October 2022, the mission has provided training to 63,000 Ukrainian soldiers, equivalent to ten brigades, with an additional 15,000 troops set to receive training by early 2025.

“EUMAM Ukraine is a key tool for the EU’s support to Ukraine, enhancing its ability to defend its territorial integrity and protect civilians from ongoing armed aggression,” stated the Council. The mission’s comprehensive training approach includes individual, collective, and specialised instruction within EU territory, in conjunction with equipment provision for both lethal and non-lethal purposes.

In alignment with today’s decision, EUMAM Ukraine will coordinate closely with NATO, particularly through the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) initiative. This cooperation will involve reciprocal information exchange to ensure transparent and inclusive support for Ukraine’s Armed Forces.

The extended mission is funded by the European Peace Facility and will continue to adapt training targets based on Ukraine’s expressed combat needs. EUMAM Ukraine’s activities form part of a broader security collaboration between Ukraine and the EU, reaffirmed in June 2024 as part of joint security commitments.
