Finland to sign contract for JASSM-ER cruise missiles for its F-35 fleet

By Defence Industry Europe

Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen has approved a procurement of JASSM-ER missiles, significantly enhancing Finland's air-to-surface capability. This procurement aligns with the Finnish Air Force's F-35 integration timeline and aims to bolster the nation's defensive measures.

The AGM-158B JASSM-ER (Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile – Extended Range) is set to be integrated into the F-35 multirole fighters, replacing the current F/A-18 Hornet capability. This acquisition, executed by the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command, supplements the F-35 system with precision-guided munitions featuring an extended range, providing a substantial upgrade over previous capabilities.

The procurement package includes missiles, manuals and documentation, replacement parts, equipment, transportation services, as well as manufacturer and supplier training, repair, and support services from 2024 to 2031, as stipulated in the Letter of Approval (LOA) agreement. Additionally, the contract encompasses US administrative services.

The US Congress authorized the sale of Lockheed Martin AGM-158B JASSM-ER missiles during the HX Programme tendering process in 2020. This move underscores the strong defence cooperation between Finland and the United States.

“The range, accuracy, and survivability of the weapon will significantly contribute to our countermeasures against potential aggressors. Along with other F-35 features, this procurement will markedly enhance our defence capabilities,” stated Colonel (Ret.) Henrik Elo, F-35 Programme Director.

As Defence Industry Europe reported, on May 28, the Polish Ministry of National Defence signed a substantial contract with the United States government for the procurement of JASSM AGM-158B ER air-launched cruise missiles.
