General Dynamics Land Systems has completed a multiyear, multimillion-dollar modernization of its headquarters in Sterling Heights, Michigan. The facility is home to nearly 2,000 employees working on major U.S. and allied ground combat programs.

The site supports engineering, development and sustainment for Abrams main battle tanks and Stryker infantry combat vehicles. Employees also work on SGT Stout air-defense platforms, Small Multipurpose Equipment Transport ground robots and software products.

The renovation ran from November 2024 through June 2026. It expanded the building’s capacity by about 100 desk seats and upgraded its lighting and office infrastructure.

The project replaced existing lighting with LED systems using modern controls and daylight harvesting. It also removed file cabinets and introduced broader design and aesthetic improvements.

GDLS said it spent $1.1 billion in Michigan between 2022 and 2025. Since 2018, the company has invested $400 million in internal research and development and $108 million in capital expenditure.

“We are proud to call Michigan home, and we are deeply committed to our mission to deliver innovative products to the men and women of the military,” said Dave Paddock, president of General Dynamics Land Systems. “Our investment in internal research and development, not to mention our enterprise infrastructure, such as our newly renovated headquarters, supports thousands of families and local businesses and strengthens the economy.”

“Michigan’s leadership in national defense drives billions in economic impact and tens of thousands of good-paying jobs,” Governor Gretchen Whitmer said. “General Dynamics Land Systems’ new headquarters will support its nearly 2,000 employees and continue its strong contributions to Michigan’s defense industry.”

“Let’s keep working together to both protect our nation and grow Michigan’s economy,” Whitmer said. State and local officials joined U.S. military and defense-industry representatives at an event marking the completion of the project.
