Germany’s parliamentary Budget Committee has approved the next phase of the MEKO A-200 DEU programme, paving the way for the planned procurement of four new frigates from TKMS. The decision marks a further step in strengthening the German Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

The approval extends a preliminary agreement signed at the end of January between TKMS and the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support of the Bundeswehr. The agreement enables continued preparatory work ahead of a final construction contract.

Under the extended arrangement, TKMS will maintain production capacity with subcontractors and suppliers while initiating orders for materials, equipment and machinery. These steps are intended to ensure progress as formal contract drafting and parliamentary review procedures move forward.

The MEKO A-200 frigate design, developed by TKMS, has already been deployed internationally and is regarded as a proven platform. The vessels are expected to provide a rapid enhancement of Germany’s anti-submarine warfare capabilities in line with NATO requirements.

Delivery of the first frigate is planned for late 2029, with the preliminary contract supporting early-stage preparations to meet this timeline. The programme is also intended to ensure that Germany can fulfil its alliance commitments in maritime defence.

Officials indicated that further contractual steps, including final approvals and detailed agreements, will be completed in due course. The project represents a significant element of Germany’s broader naval modernisation efforts.
