Italy in advanced negotiations for Leopard 2A7/2A8 tanks

By Defence Industry Europe

According to Italian media, negotiations with Germany regarding the purchase of Leopard 2A7/2A8 main battle tanks produced by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), a company of the German-French defence technology group KNDS, are already "advanced," and a political decision on this matter has already been made.

The exact number of tanks that the Italian Army (Esercito Italiano) is interested in has not been confirmed yet, although previous press publications in March mentioned a figure of 250 Leopard 2 tanks.

Initially, there was mention of Italy’s interest in acquiring Leopard 2A7 tanks. However, considering that recent contracts by Norway and Germany were for Leopard 2A8 tanks, it is likely that the Italian Army is interested in the latest version.

The future contract is estimated to be worth EUR 4-6 billion, according to Portale Difensa, and its signing would strengthen the strategic alliance between Italy and Germany, with Germany being Italy’s main economic partner.

The specific format of the contract has not been determined yet, but it will likely be an intergovernmental agreement between Berlin and Rome.

Before finalizing the contract, Rome is expected to focus on negotiations to secure appropriate compensation.

This could include establishing license production of Leopard 2 tanks in Italy, as well as Germany’s purchase of armaments and military equipment produced by the Italian industry. The SAMPT/NG air defence systems and the AW249 attack helicopters are mentioned as potential items of interest.
