NATO enhances readiness of Integrated Air and Missile Defence [VIDEO]

At the 2023 Vilnius Summit, NATO leaders agreed on a rotational air defence model. They decided to further improve the readiness, preparedness, and interoperability of NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD), in particular through regular training and rotational presence of modern air defence systems and capabilities across SACEUR’s Area of Responsibility (AOR).

After one year of development and refinement, this new concept has now been validated by NATO leaders during the NATO Summit in Washington.

The Rotational Model (RM) increases the readiness and responsiveness through interoperability of the deploying forces and increases the capability of host nations. It supports the fundamentals of NATO Air Policing and provides additional forces that can be transferred around the AOR without seeking further political endorsement, to reinforce the Alliance’s Deterrence posture. By doing so, it safeguards Allied territory, populations and forces from air and missile threats.

“In the short term, NATO will rotate modern air defence systems across the Eastern Flank to strengthen its deterrence posture, while over the medium-term it will improve surveillance, interceptors, and command and control systems,” said Major General Matt Van Wagenen, SHAPE Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations.

Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Allies have taken further steps to strengthen NATO IAMD. These measures are a strong demonstration of Allied solidarity and resolve. NATO IAMD adaptation takes into account all air and missile threats, including those posed by Russia’s growing and evolving array of capabilities, as well as the increasingly diverse and challenging air and missile threats from other state and non-state actors, ranging from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to sophisticated missile capabilities, like hypersonic missiles.
