The order was announced on 17 October 2024 in a joint statement by the Netherlands, Czechia, and Denmark, coinciding with the European Council meeting. Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans shared details of the deal during a NATO defence ministers’ gathering in Brussels. The Netherlands is investing EUR 271 million in total, with a portion of the funds allocated specifically for the procurement of these advanced artillery systems.
The DITA howitzer, produced by Excalibur Army, is a modern, self-propelled artillery vehicle that uses NATO-standard 155mm ammunition. Built on the legacy of Czechoslovak Tatra truck-mounted howitzers, the DITA features enhanced automation, requiring only a two-person crew to operate. Its advanced Onboard Control System ensures rapid deployment and precision firing, while its mobility across difficult terrain makes it highly adaptable to battlefield conditions.
This new order will further strengthen Ukraine’s defence capabilities as the country faces ongoing high demands for military equipment. Minister Brekelmans emphasised the need to continue supplying Ukraine with weapons and ammunition, noting the significant pressure the conflict places on resources. Earlier in the year, the Netherlands also invested EUR 250 million in artillery munitions for Ukraine as part of a Czech-led initiative.
