Norway commits half a billion NOK to support Ukraine’s defence industry

By Defence Industry Europe

Norway has announced a contribution of 500 million Norwegian kroner (approximately EUR 43 million) to support Ukraine’s defence industry. Defence Minister Bjørn Arild Gram revealed the funding during a meeting of Nordic Defence Ministers in Copenhagen, where discussions focused on the war in Ukraine and its ongoing need for assistance.

“This funding will be directed to Ukraine’s defence industry to enable quicker production of weapons and military equipment,” said Gram. He explained that while Norway has provided support through its own stockpiles and domestic purchases, additional measures are necessary to enhance Ukraine’s ability to sustain its defence efforts independently.

The funding will prioritise Ukraine’s specific defence needs, with domestic production offering the advantage of greater sustainability and efficiency. By strengthening Ukraine’s own manufacturing capabilities, the initiative aims to bolster its capacity to respond to the demands of the conflict.

Norway’s contribution will be part of a broader framework established by Denmark and Ukraine, which facilitates direct funding of Ukraine’s defence industry. The arrangement includes mechanisms to ensure transparency and accountability in project implementation.

“The fight Ukraine is waging is existential and crucial for the security of Europe as a whole,” said Gram, emphasising the strategic importance of continued Western support. The Defence Minister reiterated the importance of finding innovative ways to aid Ukraine’s defence efforts and maintain international solidarity.
