Oshkosh Defense has begun building the first Kaaiman patrol vehicle prototype for the Netherlands Ministry of Defence. Based on the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, it incorporates changes for expeditionary and coastal operations.

The Dutch Expeditionary Patrol Vehicle has upgraded suspension and mobility, maritime corrosion protection and modular protection options. Other changes include environmental upgrades and integrated mission systems.

“The start of DXPV prototype production is an important step in delivering next-generation capability to the Netherlands,” said Jeff Heggemeier, vice president and general manager of Oshkosh Defense. “Just as importantly, it demonstrates the strength of an active production base and our ability to continuously evolve proven vehicle technologies to address the changing needs of our customers and their missions.”

The prototype is being built on Oshkosh Defense’s active production line. The company said using an existing, fielded platform would shorten development timelines and reduce lifecycle risk.

Kaaiman’s modular architecture is designed to accommodate future upgrades and different mission configurations. Oshkosh said the vehicle’s enhancements were developed in close collaboration with customers.

“Production readiness matters,” Heggemeier said. “Because we’re building on a mature platform from an active production line, we can move from concept to prototype much faster than traditional vehicle development.”

“That allows us to deliver capability quickly while maintaining the quality and reliability our customers expect,” Heggemeier said. The same production operations are also manufacturing JLTV-based counter-drone vehicles to meet an urgent customer requirement.

Oshkosh Defense Europe B.V. and Oshkosh Defense, LLC jointly announced the start of prototype production. They did not disclose a completion date, delivery schedule or contract value.
