The refuelling mission was a significant milestone in Poland’s integration of the F-35 into its air force. The Polish fighter jet flew out of Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Fort Smith, Arkansas, while the KC-135 took off from Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.
A Polish student pilot described the experience as an honour, highlighting the symbolic connection between Illinois and the Polish community. He noted that the operation was particularly meaningful as Illinois is home to many Polish-Americans, some of whom may have supported the mission.
The aerial refuelling was the result of six months of planning between the U.S. and Polish forces. Lt. Col. Tony Meyers, mission aircraft commander, emphasised the importance of the event in strengthening cooperation with Poland’s Flight Training Unit.
The 126th Air Refuelling Wing has been supporting the Polish Air Force since 2018, previously conducting refuelling operations in Europe. This marks the first time Polish fighter pilots have been refuelled domestically in the U.S. as part of their training programme.
The operation reflects the long-standing defence partnership between Poland and Illinois, which has been in place since 1993 under the State Partnership Program. The programme fosters military cooperation between the U.S. National Guard and allied nations, with Poland being one of its earliest partners.
