The procurement process began in January 2017 with a seven-year framework contract awarded to Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV).
Initially, only 558 vehicles were called upon due to budget constraints. However, with the changing security environment and the need to equip forces for NATO’s Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF), the delivery schedule was accelerated.
The German government allocated an additional €389 million in 2021 and 2022 for the procurement of vehicles. This increased the total delivery volume to 3,271 military trucks. RMMV was able to meet the accelerated demand by expanding production capacity at its Vienna plant, ensuring delivery one year ahead of the contract’s expiration.
Currently, the BAAINBw are assessing the possibility of an additional procurement to fulfill the identified need for more vehicles. The Bundeswehr aims to meet its ongoing requirements for transport capabilities through this potential supplementary acquisition.
