The first batch of F-35A jets is expected to be delivered to Romania by 2031, equipping the nation’s air force with next-generation multirole capabilities. These jets are renowned for their cutting-edge stealth technology, sensor fusion, and unmatched air superiority, positioning Romania as a regional leader in modern air defence.
The Romanian government plans to fund the purchase through a mix of state budget allocations, loans, and loan guarantees from the United States. In a press conference, government spokesperson Mihai Constantin confirmed that a draft law has been submitted to Parliament under an emergency procedure, authorising the issuance of “Letter of Offer and Acceptance” contracts to the US government.
This acquisition comes amid heightened regional tensions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The decision to pursue the F-35 jets was made in April 2022, during a meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defence (CSAT) led by President Klaus Iohannis. Following congressional approval in the United States this September, Romania is moving forward with plans to bolster its air defence and enhance interoperability with NATO allies.
Currently, the Romanian Air Force operates 26 F-16 aircraft, with an additional 20 F-16s expected from Norway in the coming years. These F-16 jets, acquired for EUR 454 million, will continue to serve Romania’s defence needs for at least a decade, with plans to phase them out by 2040 as the country transitions to the F-35 fleet.
