Indian Air Force personnel completed acceptance tests for the set in Russia on 28 April 2026. The delivery forms part of a wider contract signed between Russia and India for five S-400 regimental sets.
The agreement, worth the equivalent of $5.43 billion, was signed on 5 April 2018. Rosoboronexport is the supplier, while India’s Ministry of Defence is the customer.
The delivery of the final regimental set is planned for November 2026. Completion of the contract is expected by the end of 2026.
Earlier deliveries included the first regimental set in December 2021, the second in July 2022 and the third in February 2023. Those systems were deployed in northern and eastern sectors, including the Sikkim corridor.
The fourth regimental set is intended for deployment in Rajasthan on India’s western operational direction. That location lies along the India-Pakistan border.
The delivered systems include the 91N6E radar system, which can detect aerodynamic targets at ranges of up to 570 km and track up to 300 targets at the same time. They also include 92N6E multifunctional illumination and guidance radars, up to 12 5P85TE3/5P85SE3 transporter-launchers and a 96L6E altitude detector.
The S-400 systems are armed with several types of surface-to-air guided missiles. These include the 40N6 with a range of up to 400 km, the 48N6DM with a range of up to 240 km, the 9M96E2 with a range of up to 120 km and the 9M96E with a range of up to 40 km.
On 27 March 2026, the Defence Acquisition Council of India’s Ministry of Defence approved the purchase of five additional S-400 regimental sets. The approval formed part of a package of orders with a total value equivalent to $25 billion.
In February 2026, the council also approved an urgent delivery of 288 missiles for S-400 systems already in service. The batch included 120 short-range missiles with a range of up to 40 km and 168 medium- and long-range missiles with ranges of 150 to 400 km.
The value of that missile batch is estimated at about $1 billion. The additional approvals point to continued Indian investment in the S-400 air defence system.
From a geopolitical and industrial perspective, the continued supply of S-400 systems underlines the durability of India-Russia defence ties despite U.S. sanctions under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act. The article said India received a special waiver from the United States.
The U.S. House of Representatives recognised India as an indispensable strategic partner and the S-400 system as important for deterring China, according to the article. India is also considering the purchase of Russia’s newer S-500 Prometey air defence system.
