Bolide 2 will become the standard ammunition for the RBS 70 NG system, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027. Saab said the missile retains the unjammable guidance method used in previous generations of the RBS 70 family.

According to the company, the new missile is designed to provide improved capability against evolving aerial threats. Saab added that the modular structure of Bolide 2 is intended to simplify future adaptations and updates.

Stefan Öberg, head of Saab’s Missile Systems business unit, said the missile was developed to improve operational flexibility for users. “With Bolide 2 we are ready to provide our customers with an even more capable missile, ready to be adapted for any new threats in the sky,” Öberg said.

“RBS 70 users can benefit from improvements including a more powerful warhead, whether they are operating in the man-portable role or, as is increasingly common, from a vehicle firing unit,” he added.

Saab said Bolide 2 can be fired from both the latest RBS 70 NG launchers and earlier generations of the system. The company also confirmed that a series of successful test firings had already been completed during the missile’s development process.

The RBS 70 family is designed for short-range air defence missions against aircraft and other airborne threats. Saab said the latest missile is intended to further strengthen the system’s operational capability and adaptability.
