For the acquisition of the extra Leonardo C-27J Spartan aircraft, the Slovenian Ministry of Defence has allocated up to EUR 88 million. The aircraft will be ordered in the same configuration as the first one, as stated by the ministry.
The agreement for the first Leonardo C-27J Spartan aircraft was signed by Slovenia, facilitated through the Italian Ministry of Defence, in November 2021. The contracted aircraft is scheduled to be delivered this year and is reportedly nearing readiness for transfer to the Slovenian air force.
The decision to purchase additional Leonardo C-27J Spartan aircraft was taken by the Slovenian Ministry of Defence with the aim of establishing an effective military air transport system. To achieve this objective, the Slovenian Armed Forces need to operate a minimum of two transport aircraft.
