Keynote speaker Prof. Dr. Carlo Masala, Director of the Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, highlighted the need for strengthened international partnerships and enhanced defence readiness. He noted that Europe’s security is facing significant challenges, with NATO remaining crucial for Germany and other nations as a cornerstone of national and alliance defence. Prof. Masala pointed to a multipolar conflict environment, citing tensions between Russia and Ukraine and escalating trade conflicts in Asia, stressing that Germany, through the Bundeswehr, must contribute to national defence and support NATO’s efforts to ensure Europe’s collective security.
Oliver Burkhard, CEO of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, underscored the importance of international cooperation in addressing these challenges. “SubCon highlights the importance of good, future-oriented cooperation with our international customers and partners. Only together can we develop innovative and customised solutions that meet the specific national technical requirements and address the changing geopolitical challenges,” said Burkhard. As a global leader in conventional submarines, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems is committed to contributing to the defence readiness of Germany and its international partners.
The conference is also spotlighting advancements in submarine design, with a particular focus on the roles of artificial intelligence (AI) and digitalisation in modern submarine construction. AI is becoming increasingly vital in enhancing capabilities such as precise surveillance and reconnaissance through AI-supported sonar systems and modern battle management systems that facilitate faster decision-making in conflict situations. Burkhard stated, “We have integrated AI as a fixed pillar of our product development. We are convinced that those who play a leading role in the development of AI will also play a major part in the future defence capabilities of our partners.”
Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems has positioned itself technologically for future challenges by investing in its facilities and expanding capacities at the Wismar shipyard. With SubCon 2024, the company aims to strengthen its focus on international partnerships and address key technological trends in maritime defence amidst the evolving geopolitical landscape.
