Sweden enhances military mobility with M3 floating bridge systems from GDELS

By Defence Industry Europe

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has secured a contract with General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) for nine M3 (Amfibiebro 400) floating bridge systems. This acquisition, an option under the SEK 400 million (approximately EUR 35 million) agreement signed in 2022, promises to enhance the mobility of Sweden's ground forces by facilitating the crossing of lakes and large waterways.

The contract entails the delivery of a 300-meter variant of the solution, known for its rapid deployment and ability to support heavy military vehicles, including main battle tanks like the Challenger 2, Leopard 2, and M1A2 Abrams. The first unit is expected to arrive in the autumn, with a total provision of up to 25 bridges anticipated between 2025 and 2027.

Jonas Lotsne, the Army Operational Head at the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, expressed enthusiasm over the contract’s realization, noting, “It is fantastically positive that we were able to exercise this option. This means that the army’s combat units are supplied with a rapidly built communication system, to more than one brigade, much sooner than we thought possible. At the same time, we become GDELS’ largest customer in the period and receive increased priority in production.”

The M3 floating bridge system, also known as Amfibiebro 400, represents the latest in GDELS’s line of bridging platforms, offering unparalleled assembly speed, in-water maneuverability, and automation for military applications. Capable of functioning as a bridge or a multi-bay raft, the system is operated by just two personnel and can be integrated with other GDELS bridging solutions, ensuring seamless transitions between water and land for military operations.
