U.S. Air Force receives first F-15E Strike Eagle fighters with advanced EPAWSS system

By Defence Industry Europe

The United States Air Force (USAF) has reached a significant milestone with the delivery of the first F-15E Strike Eagle equipped with the Eagle Passive/Active Warning and Survivability System (EPAWSS) to RAF Lakenheath in England on 16 January. This cutting-edge technology represents a leap forward in modernising the F-15 fleet to meet the demands of today’s complex threat environment.

EPAWSS replaces outdated systems designed during the Cold War, introducing a next-generation electronic warfare suite. This system enhances pilot situational awareness by autonomously detecting, identifying, and countering enemy threats, ensuring the F-15E remains a formidable presence in modern air combat.

“This system is vital to our 21st-century fighter force,” said Brigadier General Jason Voorheis, Program Executive Officer for the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center’s Fighters and Advanced Aircraft Directorate. “EPAWSS significantly improves the survivability and lethality of the F-15E and F-15EX, and its deployment to frontline fighters at RAF Lakenheath is even more critical.”

Lt. Col. Matt Heil, Materiel Leader for F-15 EPAWSS, praised the 11 years of effort by government and industry teams to achieve this milestone. “EPAWSS is a game-changer, providing critically needed capabilities for F-15 aircrew, Air Combat Command, and the Nation,” Heil stated, emphasising the system’s ability to evolve through software updates to stay ahead of emerging threats.

Developed by BAE Systems and integrated by Boeing, EPAWSS is manufactured in Nashua, New Hampshire, and San Antonio, Texas. Boeing, which also produces the F-15EX Eagle II in St. Louis, Missouri, ensures the seamless integration of this advanced electronic warfare system into the aircraft.
