U.S. Navy neutralises Houthi-launched drones and missiles in the Gulf of Aden

By Defence Industry Europe

The U.S. Navy destroyers USS Stockdale (DDG 106) and USS O’Kane (DDG 77) successfully intercepted and defeated multiple Houthi-launched weapons during a transit through the Gulf of Aden from 9 to 10 December. The destroyers were escorting three U.S.-owned, operated, and flagged merchant vessels during the incident.

The attack included one-way uncrewed aerial systems (OWA UAS) and an anti-ship cruise missile (ASCM). The U.S. Navy effectively neutralised all threats, ensuring no injuries or damage to the vessels, crew, or civilian shipping in the area.

This marks the second recent Houthi attack thwarted by U.S. naval forces in the Gulf of Aden. From 30 November to 1 December, the same destroyers successfully repelled an attack from Iran-backed Houthi forces during another maritime transit.

“These actions reflect the ongoing commitment of CENTCOM forces to protect U.S. personnel, regional partners, and international shipping against attacks by Iran-backed Houthis,” stated U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). The operations underscore CENTCOM’s dedication to maintaining maritime security in a strategically critical region.

The Gulf of Aden remains a vital waterway for global trade, and these incidents highlight persistent threats to maritime safety. U.S. forces continue to work with regional and international partners to ensure the free and secure flow of commerce through the region.
