UK Military Support to Ukraine Brings Economic Boost and Job Creation

By Defence Industry Europe

The UK Ministry of Defence has announced a significant military and economic commitment to Ukraine, set to bolster the UK defence industry. In 2025, a Yorkshire-based firm will resume artillery barrel production after nearly two decades, as part of a £61 million contract with BAE Systems and Sheffield Forgemasters.

These barrels will be manufactured in Yorkshire before being sent to Ukraine for final assembly and integration. The initiative highlights the UK’s dual focus on supporting Ukraine’s military needs while driving domestic economic growth and creating jobs in the defence sector.

Additionally, the UK is delivering a new mobile air defence capability, Gravehawk, to Ukraine this year. Designed to retrofit air-to-air missiles for ground-based defence, the innovative system will utilise missiles already in Ukraine’s arsenal, enhancing their capacity to protect cities, troops, and critical infrastructure.

Two prototypes of the Gravehawk system were tested in Ukraine in September, with 15 additional units to follow this year. The programme exemplifies the rapid development of cutting-edge solutions tailored to the immediate needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, visiting Ukraine for the first time since assuming office, reaffirmed the UK’s unwavering support. “Ukraine’s security is our security,” he said, highlighting the nation’s commitment to strengthening Ukraine’s military position against Russian aggression.

Defence Secretary John Healey emphasised the strategic significance of these measures. “Our plan will increase Ukraine’s military capability, strengthen industrial ties, and escalate pressure on Putin,” he stated, noting the UK’s role in delivering vital equipment and expertise.

The UK has pledged £3 billion in lethal aid to Ukraine, with an additional £4.5 billion allocated for 2025. The funding includes the procurement of air defence systems, drones, and essential equipment, supported by extraordinary profits from immobilised Russian assets.
