UK Ministry of Defence awards GBP 300 million artillery contract for Ukraine

By Defence Industry Europe

The UK Ministry of Defence has announced a significant GBP 300 million contract to supply Ukraine with 152mm artillery shells, marking the largest support package delivered by the International Fund for Ukraine (IFU) to date. This move follows a pledge made by the UK Prime Minister during the NATO Summit, where it was revealed that eight countries have joined the UK in providing over £1 billion to support Ukraine’s defence needs.

The artillery shells, compatible with Ukraine’s Soviet-era guns, are part of a broader effort to bolster the nation’s military capabilities amidst ongoing conflict. The Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) Operations Directorate’s Rapid Procurement team played a crucial role in sourcing and securing this equipment, with thousands of shells expected to be delivered before the end of the year.

The urgency of accelerating the UK’s military support for Ukraine was a key topic of discussion during a recent visit to London by Ukraine’s Defence Minister, Rustem Umerov, who met with the UK Defence Secretary. The GBP 300 million contract is expected to deliver 120,000 newly-manufactured artillery shells over the next 18 months, significantly boosting Ukraine’s stockpiles and ensuring a steady supply of vital ammunition.
