Ukraine and Sweden are expanding cooperation on aviation, air defence and defence technology projects as Kyiv seeks to strengthen its military capabilities. The discussions took place during meetings in Stockholm involving Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov and senior Swedish officials.

Fedorov met Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and held talks with Defence Minister Pål Jonson. The discussions focused on strengthening Ukraine’s air defence and aviation capabilities as part of the country’s broader defence strategy.

One of the main topics was the potential delivery of Gripen fighter aircraft to Ukraine. Ukrainian officials described the enhancement of air defence and combat aviation as a priority for protecting the country’s airspace.

The parties also discussed expanding defence-industrial cooperation, including anti-ballistic technologies and other defence systems. Ukraine said these initiatives could strengthen the defence capabilities of both Ukraine and its partners.

Kyiv outlined additional support priorities during the talks, including backing for the Czech Initiative on extended-range munitions and support for the PURL and JUMPSTART mechanisms. The sides also discussed cooperation on middle-strike capabilities and activities within capability coalitions, including the Electronic Warfare Coalition.

Ukraine proposed broader cooperation aimed at strengthening Sweden’s defence capabilities through a mutually beneficial partnership. Ukrainian officials said battlefield experience and technologies developed during the war could contribute to the security of Sweden and other allied countries.

As part of that approach, Ukraine proposed launching the BRAVE SWEDEN project based on the Brave1 defence innovation cluster. The initiative would support joint projects, defence start-ups and the exchange of expertise related to modern warfare technologies.

Fedorov also met representatives of Saab, where discussions focused heavily on Gripen fighter aircraft. Ukraine described the Gripen programme as a potential “game-changer” for strengthening the country’s defence capabilities.

The discussions with Saab also covered radar systems, satellite communications and possible joint production projects. Ukraine offered the company access to combat experience, operational data and digital systems, including the DELTA platform.

During the visit, Fedorov also met representatives of Ovzon to discuss mission-critical satellite communications systems. The parties reviewed opportunities to expand the use of those systems in support of Ukraine’s armed forces.

The Ukrainian defence minister also held talks with members of the Swedish parliament, the Riksdag, led by Speaker Andreas Norlén and Defence Committee chair Peter Hultqvist. Fedorov briefed the delegation on the implementation of Ukraine’s defence strategy across the air, land and economic domains.

Ukraine thanked Sweden for its continued military and political support, particularly in the areas of air defence, radar systems and electronic warfare. Ukrainian officials also noted Sweden’s delivery of specialised equipment intended to support the operation of military airfields.
