Ukraine and Sweden to enhance defence industry cooperation through bilateral agreement

By Defence Industry Europe

The Ministry of Defence of Ukraine has announced progress toward a bilateral agreement with Sweden aimed at fostering cooperation between their defence industries. The announcement follows a meeting between Serhiy Boyev, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Defence for European Integration, and Brigadier General Johan Axelsson, Director of Testing and Evaluation at the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV).

During the meeting, both sides discussed the development of a bilateral agreement to support joint defence projects, including the production of priority defence systems. The discussions also included an initial list of products to be developed collaboratively, reflecting Ukraine’s focus on air defence systems, munitions, and long-range capabilities.

Brigadier General Axelsson highlighted Sweden’s upcoming decision on a new military aid package for Ukraine, expected to be the largest since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion. This package is anticipated to include weaponry and investments in Ukrainian defence production, specifically to enhance long-range operational capacity.

The talks also addressed cooperation on armoured vehicle production, including contracts for Swedish CV-0 infantry fighting vehicles. Plans were outlined to establish a partnership for the maintenance and repair of these vehicles in Ukraine, reinforcing its ability to support its own defence infrastructure.

Both sides emphasised the importance of secure battlefield communication for effective military operations. Sweden’s satellite communication systems, which have demonstrated their reliability, were identified as a potential area for future collaboration.
