Ukraine unveils Magura V7: advanced naval drone capable of destroying fighter jets

By Defence Industry Europe

On May 14, the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) presented a new generation of naval drones, named Magura, during a public event in Kyiv. Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov, Chief of DIU, introduced the drones as part of Ukraine's strategy to enhance its maritime capabilities.

The Magura series includes several models with distinct functions. The Magura V5 drone is designed for swarming and sinking ships, targeting Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. The Magura V6P serves as a multifunctional naval drone platform, while the Magura V7 is notable for being the first drone to destroy an enemy fighter jet. An upgraded version of the V7 features a combat machine-gun module.

According to DIU, these drones have been operational in the Black Sea for over two years, successfully striking 17 Russian military targets and destroying 15, including two Mi-8 helicopters, two Su-30 fighter jets, and several Russian naval vessels. The total estimated damage to Russian assets exceeds $500 million.

Group 13, a special operations unit within DIU responsible for deploying the drones, claims that the introduction of the Magura drones has significantly impacted Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, reportedly forcing it to retreat to ports. The commander of Group 13, identified as “Thirteenth”, stated that the unit started from scratch, gaining experience through direct operations against Russian naval targets.

The event also showcased the Magura V7, equipped with two AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles, which has been used to shoot down two Russian Su-30 fighter jets. DIU representatives credited Ukrainian engineers for the continuous development of the drones despite wartime challenges.

Military expert Mykhailo Samus commented that the success of the Magura drones represents a shift in naval warfare, highlighting how unmanned systems are challenging traditional 20th-century naval fleets. He noted that Ukraine’s innovative use of drones in maritime operations is shaping new military doctrines.

The presentation concluded with acknowledgements to supporters, including volunteers and technical experts, for their contributions to developing the Magura fleet. DIU emphasised that the continued enhancement of these systems remains a strategic priority.
