The Gripen E aircraft are expected to begin operating in Ukraine in early 2029. The agreement also includes the supply of necessary equipment and ongoing maintenance support.
The signing took place in the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and representatives of the defence ministries of Ukraine and Sweden. The agreement was signed by Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine Sergiy Boyev, Defence Procurement Agency Director Arsen Zhumadilov and Swedish Defence Materiel Administration Director General Mikael Granholm.
The Ministry of Defence said Ukrainian pilots and technical personnel are already receiving the required training with support from partner countries. This training is intended to prepare Ukraine for the introduction of the aircraft and their future operation.
Kyiv said the Gripen E will significantly enhance Ukraine’s ability to counter aerial threats. The aircraft will help destroy enemy cruise missiles and drones more effectively and support combat operations along the frontline.
A key element of the new capability is the Meteor air-to-air missile, which has a range of more than 100 kilometres. The missile will give Ukrainian pilots a long-range engagement option as part of the Gripen E weapons package.
The Gripen E is also equipped with a modern AESA radar and one of the world’s best electronic warfare systems, according to the ministry. These systems are intended to help Ukrainian pilots detect threats first and jam enemy radars and air defence systems.
The aircraft is described as offering technological superiority and low observability. Its electronic warfare capabilities and sensor suite are central to the role it is expected to play in strengthening Ukraine’s air defence.
The Gripen E also offers increased performance through a new engine and greater fuel capacity. The ministry said this will allow the aircraft to carry a larger weapons payload and remain airborne for longer during operational missions.
The agreement is being implemented through a European loan with support from the United Kingdom, which Ukraine described as one of its strategic partners. Ukraine expressed gratitude to the Government of Sweden, Saab, its partners and the Ministry of Defence team for their support and work.
Ukraine is also due to receive another variant of the JAS 39 as military assistance. The first 16 Gripen C/D aircraft are scheduled to arrive in early 2027.
