The first group of Ukrainian military pilots has started their training to become F-16 fighter pilots in Romania. They are currently undergoing their theoretical training at the European F-16 Training Centre, based at Fetesti Air Base. This training initiative is supported by several nations, including the Netherlands, which has provided F-16 aircraft for the programme. Of the total 18 aircraft available for training, 14 are currently in place.

The Ukrainian pilots are expected to begin practical flying lessons by the end of the year. Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans remarked, “It’s a significant step forward that the first Ukrainian pilots have now started their training. At the European F-16 Training Centre, they will lay a solid foundation to defend their country against ongoing Russian attacks with this fighter aircraft. Together with our allies, we remain committed to strengthening Ukraine’s air defence, which is urgently needed.”

The Netherlands, along with Denmark and the United States, has taken the lead in training Ukrainian pilots to operate F-16 jets. The three countries are also playing a key role in the delivery of F-16s to Ukraine through an international coalition led by Major General Arnoud Stallmann.

In addition to the aircraft provided for training purposes, the Netherlands is also supplying 24 F-16s directly to Ukraine. These fighter jets are intended to aid Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Due to operational security concerns, limited information is being shared about the delivery of these aircraft.
