Employment in the aerospace and defence industries grew by 8% in 2023, supporting over 1,027,000 direct jobs. Including related sectors, the industry sustains more than 3.9 million jobs across Europe, underlining its pivotal role in the region’s economy.
Turnover in the industry surged by 10.1%, reaching €290.4 billion, driven by a 17% increase in defence and a 3% growth in civil aeronautics. These figures reflect the industries’ ability to adapt and thrive in an unpredictable geopolitical and economic landscape.
ASD leaders used the occasion to call for supportive policies to enhance innovation and competitiveness. Guillaume Faury, ASD President and CEO of Airbus, stressed the urgency of coordinated efforts: “2025 is the year for decisive action to secure Europe’s future. An industrial policy that fully supports aerospace, space, and defence will empower Europe to lead globally in innovation, security, and sustainability.”
The report highlights the critical role of aerospace and defence in driving innovation and ensuring Europe’s strategic autonomy. Industry leaders emphasised the need for resilience amid rising demand and a volatile global environment. Micael Johansson, Vice-Chairman of the ASD Board and CEO of Saab, noted: “Europe must intensify its actions to secure a resilient and competitive industry, ensuring we meet the increasing demand in an unpredictable world.”
Reflecting on 2023, Jan Pie, ASD Secretary General, lauded the sector’s adaptability: “2023 underscored our industry’s resilience and adaptability. Bold policies are essential to enhance competitiveness and deliver the innovative capabilities that safeguard Europe’s future.”
