The modernisation programme will cover six E-7A Wedgetail aircraft currently operated by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), along with the associated ground support systems. These upgrades are intended to keep the fleet in line with evolving defence requirements and maintain its effectiveness in surveillance and airspace security missions.
According to Australian media reports, the contract is expected to sustain more than 360 highly skilled jobs in the country’s defence industry while creating an additional 140 positions. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening the domestic defence sector and securing long-term employment in aerospace and technology fields.
Australia initially acquired six E-7A Wedgetail aircraft in two separate procurement phases. Deliveries began in late 2009 and were completed by June 2012, with the aircraft playing a crucial role in national airspace protection and international coalition operations.
Beyond domestic security duties, the Wedgetail fleet has been actively engaged in allied missions, including support for coalition forces in the Middle East. In 2023-2024, one aircraft was deployed to Europe to assist NATO in safeguarding its airspace amid the ongoing security crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The E-7A Wedgetail has also been adopted by South Korea and Turkey, with the United States placing orders for the aircraft. Additionally, NATO is considering the acquisition of six units for a joint fleet, which would contribute to the phased replacement of ageing Boeing E-3 Sentry aircraft.
