JR3 is intended to replace the Reduced Range Practice Rocket currently used for training. The complete round is compatible with HIMARS and M270 launchers and is packaged in a reusable pod holding 24 rockets.
“Our new training round offers a scalable, very affordable solution built on mature rocket motor technology,” said Dave Griser, vice president, Lockheed Martin Precision Fires Rockets. “With a 24-round rocket launch pod, our JR3 system meets the Army’s demand for higher training volume and lower cost without sacrificing performance.”
The cost case for JR3 rests on a low-cost motor, reloadable launch tubes and reusable pods. Its modular design also includes an adaptable payload, allowing the same basic architecture to support repeatable training cycles.
Lockheed Martin designed the system to let crews conduct more realistic live-fire training on ranges where space is limited. The rounds can be used during daytime or night-time exercises and under different environmental conditions.
The company plans a further flight test later this year to continue validating JR3 performance. Lockheed Martin said the system’s architecture and technology may also support future efforts such as the Army’s Direct Support Fires Technology initiative for mass-produced, low-cost direct-fire rockets.
