Denmark signs contract with MBDA France for VL MICA ground-based air defence system

By Defence Industry Europe

The Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) has signed a contract with MBDA France for the delivery of the VL MICA system, marking a key step in the initial build-up of Denmark’s ground-based air defence capability. The agreement covers two so-called “fire units” and is part of efforts to ensure operational readiness by 2026.

This procurement follows a recent decision to initiate the re-establishment of ground-based air defence in Denmark. The acquisition is being made under the framework of the Danish Defence Accelerated Procurement Fund, based on recommendations from the Chief of Defence.

“The contract with MBDA France is an important step towards re-establishing a Danish ground-based air defence capability,” said Jan Toft, Head of DALO’s Investment Division. “We are already well underway with preparations to be ready to implement the VL MICA system once it arrives in Denmark.”

“These preparations include hiring, equipping, and training personnel, procuring and preparing support equipment, planning logistics support operations, and many other tasks,” Toft added. This work is being carried out in parallel with the setup of the leased Norwegian NASAMS system, which is also part of the initial air defence acquisition.
