The gradual replacement of the F-16 follows years of preparation and investment in modernising Denmark’s air combat capabilities. Currently, Denmark has at least 11 F-35A Lightning II jets stationed at Skrydstrup Air Base, while an additional six aircraft are based in Luke Air Force Base, Arizona, USA, where they are being used for pilot training.

Denmark has ordered a total of 27 F-35A Lightning II aircraft, which will fully replace the F-16 fleet over the coming years. The first Danish pilots began training in the United States in 2020, with the first flight by a Danish pilot taking place in January 2021 using a US Air Force (USAF) F-35A, ensuring full operational standardisation with NATO partners.
Initially, the F-35A will operate alongside the F-16, ensuring a smooth transition as the new aircraft reach full operational capability. The gradual phase-in will allow pilots, ground crews, and operational planners to refine tactics and procedures, enhancing Denmark’s air defence posture.
Hyldgaard emphasised that the F-35A provides a strategic advantage, not only deterring threats but also strengthening Denmark’s ability to defend its airspace. The aircraft’s advanced stealth, sensor fusion, and interoperability with NATO allies make it a key asset in modern air combat.
Major General Jan Dam, Chief of the Air Command, highlighted the complexity of training personnel, building new facilities, and managing the phased retirement of the F-16. He commended the professionalism and dedication of the teams involved, ensuring Denmark’s F-35 fleet is ready for operational deployment.
Denmark is now the fifth European country to introduce the F-35A Lightning II into active service, joining Norway, the UK, Italy, and the Netherlands. The close collaboration with Norway, which also operates the F-35A, is expected to enhance training, operations, and regional security cooperation.
As the F-35A gradually takes over all operational roles, Denmark is reinforcing its commitment to NATO and ensuring its air force remains at the forefront of modern aerial warfare. This transition signifies a new era for Danish air defence, improving national security and strengthening allied capabilities.
