The event signals a new phase for the multi-role turboprop aircraft and a significant step for aircraft production in Germany. It also reflects the restart of series production following the acquisition of the facility by General Atomics Group around five years ago.
The demonstrator flight follows extensive preparation, including the establishment of a new production line and integration of suppliers and partners. The successful take-off is seen as the result of several years of development work.
“Taking the Do228 NXT into the air for the first time was an extraordinary experience,” said Martina Hierle, test pilot and programme manager. “The aircraft performed flawlessly.”
“You can immediately sense what this aircraft is capable of and that the Do228 NXT is ready for demanding missions around the world,” she added. “This successful first flight is the result of incredible dedication and hard work from the entire team – and it proves that every effort was absolutely worth it.”
“With the Do228 NXT, we now have a modern aircraft that carries the legacy of the Do228 into the future,” Hierle said. The aircraft is intended to support a wide range of operational missions.
Further production test flights are planned in the coming weeks to collect performance data. These will include testing across different altitudes, speeds and operational scenarios.
The programme will assess flight characteristics through varied manoeuvres, including take-offs and landings. The results are expected to support further development and certification processes.
Following the test phase, the aircraft is scheduled for public unveiling in summer 2026. It will then be presented at several international trade shows and events.
The first appearance is planned for ILA 2026 in Berlin, followed by an international debut at the Farnborough Airshow in the United Kingdom. These events are intended to showcase the aircraft’s capabilities to global audiences.
“The first flight of the NXT demonstrator is the culmination of years of dedicated work across all departments,” said Craig Simpson, managing director of GA-ATS. “It is a true reflection of the expertise and commitment of our entire team in Oberpfaffenhofen – and a moment we are all incredibly proud of.”
“The Do228 NXT is not just an upgrade – it is our answer to the demands of modern aviation, and we are proud to bring it to market,” he added. “We want to show the aircraft and its features to the world, as there is widespread international interest in the Do228 NXT.”
