The Council of the European Union has adopted a €120 million assistance measure under the European Peace Facility to support the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova. The measure is intended to strengthen Moldova’s air defence capabilities at a time when the EU is continuing security assistance to the country.

The funding will finance a mid-range air defence system for the Moldovan armed forces. The Council said the measure complements earlier European Peace Facility support for air surveillance and air defence.

The Council said the new assistance will help Moldova’s armed forces improve their operational effectiveness. It said the support is also intended to help the country better protect civilians.

The decision brings total EU support to Moldova under the European Peace Facility to €317 million. The facility has become one of the EU’s main tools for financing military and defence-related support to partner countries.

The European Peace Facility was established in March 2021 to finance Common Foreign and Security Policy actions in military and defence areas. Its stated purpose is to prevent conflict, preserve peace and strengthen international security and stability.

The facility allows the EU to finance measures that strengthen the military and defence capacities of third states, as well as regional and international organisations. In Moldova’s case, the latest measure focuses specifically on expanding air defence through the provision of a mid-range system.
