Hanwha Aerospace Romania strengthens defence industry and local partnerships

By Defence Industry Europe

Hanwha Aerospace Romania, a subsidiary of South Korea's Hanwha Aerospace, has been established to support Romania’s military modernisation and strengthen its defence capabilities. The company aims to contribute to Romania’s security by fostering local industrial partnerships, advancing technology transfer, and creating economic opportunities through job creation and infrastructure development.

At the recent Land Warfare Europe conference in Bucharest, attended by over 200 military and industry leaders from more than 20 countries, Hanwha Aerospace Romania presented its plans for local collaboration. Key priorities include establishing domestic manufacturing and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services to enhance Romania’s defence sector and economy.

In July 2024, Hanwha Aerospace signed a major agreement with Romania’s Ministry of National Defence to supply 54 K9 Self-Propelled Howitzers and 36 K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicles. Deliveries for this contract are expected to begin in 2027, with a focus on integrating Romanian companies into Hanwha’s global supply chain. This initiative highlights Hanwha Aerospace’s commitment to fostering long-term partnerships and localised production.

“By this important step, the creation of Hanwha Aerospace Romania, we dedicate ourselves to deliver cutting-edge defence capabilities to the Romanian Armed Forces,” Peter Bae, Head of Hanwha Aerospace Romania, said at Land Warfare Europe conference in Bucharest.

“Furthermore, we will develop strong partnerships with local industries and defense companies by activating valued localization programs including local manufacturing, technology transfer, and MRO operations,” said Bae.

The company is also proposing its advanced Redback Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) for Romania’s military modernisation programme. The Redback, developed for Australia’s LAND 400 Phase 3 programme, incorporates advanced technologies such as composite rubber tracks, active protection systems, and a helmet-mounted see-through armour display. Its shared components with the K9 system could offer significant operational and cost efficiencies.

Hanwha Aerospace Romania plans to construct a new facility in Romania dedicated to production, research, training, and MRO operations. In addition, the company has signed agreements with Romanian defence organisations, including Romarm and INCAS, to expand collaboration in the production and maintenance of advanced weapon systems.
