South Korea’s Hyundai Rotem has received the AQAP-2110 certificate, confirming that the K2 Black Panther main battle tank complies with NATO’s quality assurance system. It is the first such certificate granted to a Korean defence manufacturer whose tanks are in service with the Polish Armed Forces.

The certificate was presented on 13 July at Hyundai Rotem’s headquarters in Uiwang by representatives of South Korea’s Defense Agency for Technology and Quality. AQAP-2110 is one of the key requirements for companies seeking contracts with NATO countries and confirms compliance with strict quality management standards.

The certification covers not only the K2 tank, but also the wider family of vehicles based on the same platform. These include recovery vehicles, accompanying bridge systems and engineering vehicles.

Hyundai Rotem said it plans to extend certification to additional products in response to market demand. The certificate is expected to support the company’s participation in tenders organised by NATO member states, particularly as defence spending across the alliance continues to rise.

NATO members account for about 55% of global military expenditure, according to the source material. That makes compliance with alliance quality standards an important factor for companies seeking access to major procurement programmes.

A further export boost could come from parallel negotiations between South Korea and NATO on a framework agreement covering public procurement in the defence sector. Such an agreement would give Korean manufacturers easier access to jointly funded NATO acquisition programmes.

Poland remains the only NATO user of the K2 Black Panther tank. The certification therefore strengthens Hyundai Rotem’s position as it seeks to expand its role in the alliance’s defence market.
