The Grey Wolf is nearly 50% faster than the UH-1N and can transport twice as many troops. Enhanced defensive systems, greater range and higher speed are expected to help security forces move personnel and reach missile sites sooner.
“For more than half a century, the UH-1N Huey has been a key element of our Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) security, and we owe a debt of gratitude to the crews who flew and maintained it over all these years,” said Gen. S.L. Davis, commander of Air Force Global Strike Command. “Securing these missiles demands our best efforts and the MH-139 will significantly improve our capabilities.”
The helicopter will support 20th Air Force operations across an area of responsibility covering about 33,600 square miles. Missile fields spread across prairies, plains and mountain ranges require aircraft capable of operating over long distances and austere terrain around the clock.
The MH-139 will also support the Air Force’s planned replacement of the Minuteman III ICBM with the next-generation LGM-35A Sentinel weapon system. Its speed, range and modern command-and-control systems are intended to protect nuclear assets while Sentinel sites enter service and Minuteman III facilities are retired.
The declaration followed testing, conversion training and operational milestones conducted by the 582nd Helicopter Group. The 550th Helicopter Squadron completed the aircraft’s first Initial Operational Test and Evaluation flight in January 2025.
In January 2026, the 40th Helicopter Squadron used the MH-139 for its first operational Minuteman III convoy mission. The helicopter escorted maintenance and armored security vehicles for more than 100 miles during a six-hour movement without refueling.
“It has been a distinct privilege to watch the iconic Huey faithfully support our global operations throughout my entire career,” said Col. Bryant Bevan, commander of the 582nd Helicopter Group. “However, this transition represents a critical leap forward.”
“The advanced capabilities of the MH-139A Grey Wolf will directly empower our airborne forces with the enhanced speed, range, and survivability required to decisively defend and secure the Minuteman III weapons system,” Bevan added. Beyond convoy protection and continuous emergency-response duties, the helicopter will also support search and rescue, disaster response and medical evacuations.
