IAI signs MoU with Greek partner to equip Hellenic Navy with BlueWhale autonomous submarine

By Defence Industry Europe

During the DEFEA exhibition, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Hellenic Aerospace Industry (HAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to offer IAI’s BlueWhale autonomous submarine system to the Hellenic Navy. The collaboration marks a significant milestone in defence and business cooperation between Greece and Israel.

The partnership will see HAI play a central role in the production and technological advancement of the BlueWhale system. HAI’s involvement will build on its extensive experience in designing, developing, and producing complex technological systems.

The MoU will also enable HAI to gain access to IAI’s cutting-edge technology. This includes opportunities for technology transfer and active participation in projects of significant operational value.

BlueWhale, developed by IAI, is a large uncrewed underwater vehicle measuring 10.9 meters in length, 1.12 meters in diameter, and weighing 5.5 tons. It is capable of performing a variety of covert maritime operations, including intelligence-gathering, submarine and underwater target detection, and naval mine detection.

The autonomous submarine can execute many tasks traditionally performed by crewed submarines, operating for several weeks at minimal cost and without risking human operators. It has been deployed successfully for thousands of diving hours, proving its effectiveness in ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance), EW/ESM (Electronic Warfare/Electronic Support Measures), and MCM (Mine Countermeasure) missions.

IAI President and CEO, Boaz Levy, expressed pride in strengthening the partnership with HAI. He stated, “We are proud to strengthen our partnership with the Hellenic Aerospace Industry through this strategic agreement, further enhancing the defense capabilities of Greece. This collaboration reflects our deep commitment to supporting Greece’s defense priorities by offering cutting-edge, operationally proven solutions while fostering local industry, technological independence, and long-term regional resilience.”

Dror Bar, IAI’s EVP and CEO of ELTA, highlighted the significance of the MoU. He said, “BlueWhale represents a transformational leap in maritime defense. It delivers the advanced capabilities of a crewed submarine. Today’s MoU marks an exciting step forward in our commitment to advancing Greece’s maritime security and operational readiness with cutting-edge, autonomous technology.”

HAI CEO, Rear Admiral (ret.) Alexandros Diakopoulos, underscored the strategic importance of the collaboration. “This strategic collaboration marks a step forward in strengthening Greece’s undersea defense capabilities. The potential integration and co-production of BlueWhale deepens the bilateral ties and represents a leap toward technological autonomy for our country.”

He further noted the importance of the system in the Aegean Sea’s complex geography. “The Aegean Sea is characterized by complex geography and the ability to conduct persistent surveillance can ensure rapid response and operational advantage. The deployment of the BlueWhale will offer Hellenic Armed Forces with the advantages of a robust solution that combines anti-submarine warfare, mine countermeasures, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities.”
