Manufactured by Dassault Aviation in Bordeaux, France, the Falcon 6X is a state-of-the-art, fuel-efficient jet capable of addressing Ireland’s growing national and international obligations. Speaking on the deal, the Tánaiste described the aircraft as “a game-changer for the State’s transport, airlift, and medical capabilities.” He emphasised its impressive range of over 5,000 nautical miles, allowing it to fly directly to destinations such as the western United States without refuelling.
The aircraft, operated by the Irish Air Corps from Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel, will serve a diverse range of missions. These include non-combatant evacuation of Irish citizens in crises, medical evacuations, air-ambulance patient transfers, and logistical support for Irish Defence Forces on overseas deployments. Additionally, it will provide an independent and flexible air transport service for government needs, ensuring rapid responses to national and international commitments.
The Falcon 6X represents a generational leap in performance, featuring enhanced fuel efficiency, reduced carbon emissions, and advanced operational capabilities. Its ability to operate from challenging airfields and in adverse weather conditions makes it particularly well-suited for varied missions. With seating for up to 17 people and a passenger capacity of 14, the aircraft also includes a modern avionics suite, secure communications, and safety equipment tailored to military standards.
The jet replaces the ageing Learjet currently in service, addressing the technical and range limitations of its predecessor while eliminating the need for private aircraft rentals. The Tánaiste highlighted its value in supporting Ireland’s upcoming EU Presidency and beyond, as well as its critical role in emergency and routine operations.
The procurement process for the Falcon 6X adhered to stringent standards, following the Defence and Security Directive 81/2009/EC. This included a robust analysis of options under the Public Spending Code and a competitive process using a negotiated procedure. The deal ensures the integration of specialised military equipment onto the aircraft, further enhancing its functionality for defence and governmental missions.
