The Low-Profile Masts replace traditional hull-penetrating periscopes with telescoping sensor systems. They carry high-definition visible and infrared cameras that provide crews with a 360-degree view around the submarine.
The design gives sailors access to enhanced optical and sensor data without using a conventional periscope arrangement. L3Harris said the technology supports both situational awareness and the stealth performance of nuclear-powered submarines.
Nino DiCosmo, president of Maritime, Space & Mission Systems at L3Harris, said the system would strengthen the fleet’s ability to operate beneath the surface. “The LPM represents a critical leap forward in submarine stealth and situational awareness, ensuring our fleet maintains superiority beneath the waves for decades to come.”
L3Harris will provide engineering support for the Type 20 and Type 24 Low-Profile Mast systems. Its work will include design, testing and support through delivery to the Navy’s operational fleet.
The company will remain the prime contractor and design agent for the mast program. The award expands its position in the Navy’s submarine supply chain as the service advances its Virginia-class attack submarine and Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine programs.
