“The multifunction radar system significantly enhances the national division’s capabilities,” said Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas. “It helps detect both enemy artillery firing positions and FPV drones, thereby increasing the protection of our soldiers on the battlefield.”
The radar is primarily designed to locate enemy indirect-fire systems and will work alongside other reconnaissance and fire-support assets. The Ministry of National Defence said it would help the division use its capabilities more effectively and improve coordination of military operations.
Depending on its configuration and technical equipment, the GM200 MM/C can also provide airspace surveillance and be integrated into air defence systems. Lithuania intends to work with the Dutch defence ministry on maintenance, support and a continuous improvement programme to keep the systems ready and adapt them to changing operational needs.
Lithuanian company ELSIS TS is participating as a Thales subcontractor, contributing domestic systems-integration expertise. The ministry said its involvement would strengthen the role of Lithuanian companies in defence projects.
The contract covers technical support and opportunities for further development as well as the radar acquisition. Kaunas said the investment would strengthen deterrence and improve the Lithuanian Armed Forces’ readiness to operate alongside NATO allies.
