MPDS restructures key technologies around a modular framework that allows the Department of War and industry to integrate different payloads with limited changes to the wider system. Lockheed Martin is positioning that flexibility as a way to expand the operational use of an existing hypersonic airframe without developing a separate weapon for every mission.
The same architecture could be configured for deep long-range strike missions or adapted to carry larger payloads when less range is required. Lockheed Martin said MPDS could also incorporate missile defence applications, broadening the potential mission set of the underlying hypersonic technology.
The investment is tied to the Department of War’s push to scale hypersonic capabilities and accelerate munitions development. Lockheed Martin said faster integration of alternative payloads could shorten development timelines that have traditionally delayed the introduction of new capabilities.
“Our Modular Delivery System reflects our commitment to listening to our customers and delivering innovative solutions that meet evolving mission requirements,” Johnathon Caldwell, Lockheed Martin vice president and general manager of Strategic and Missile Defense Systems said. “By investing in a modular payload delivery system built upon our proven hypersonic technologies and legacy, we’re expanding operational utility, delivering affordability and accelerating advanced capabilities that would be historically burdened by development timelines and challenges.”
Lockheed Martin said MPDS builds on flight-tested hypersonic technologies and an established industrial base. Its modular design is intended to reduce non-recurring engineering work and costs associated with integrating new hypersonic payloads.
The production model also focuses on simplifying assembly, integration and testing while increasing the use of automation. Lockheed Martin said reducing labour hours through automated processes could shorten delivery times and increase the value derived from an existing airframe capability.
The company said its MPDS investment supports the Department of War’s Scaled Hypersonics Critical Technology Area and broader munitions acceleration initiative. Lockheed Martin also plans to work with government, industry and academia on integrating the modular system with other advanced capabilities.
The investment reflects a broader effort by Lockheed Martin to make hypersonic technologies more scalable across different mission requirements. The company is seeking to combine qualified designs, modular payload integration and more efficient manufacturing to reduce cost and accelerate delivery.
