The construction of the Formion involves a notable partnership with Greek industry, featuring a transfer of technology that allows several pre-outfitted hull blocks to be manufactured at Greece’s Salamis Shipyards. These blocks were delivered in February and are currently being integrated with other segments at the Lorient facility.
This frigate is part of the Hellenic Navy’s FDI (Frégate de Défense et d’Intervention) program, which aims to boost maritime defence capabilities through advanced, multi-role vessels. The first of these frigates, the Kimon, launched in October 2023, is now undergoing harbor trials, while the second, Nearchos, is preparing for its maiden voyage in the latter half of 2024.
Each FDI frigate boasts a comprehensive suite of armaments, including Exocet and Aster missiles, anti-submarine torpedoes, and a rapid-fire 76 mm gun. The ships also accommodate a medium-sized helicopter and unmanned aerial vehicles, enhancing their operational flexibility.
The Formion is expected to complete its assembly with the last hull block scheduled for delivery in July 2024, keeping the project well on track for the planned 2025 and 2026 delivery dates of all three frigates to the Hellenic Navy.
