Netherlands to buy more radio equipment from L3Harris

By Defence Industry Europe

On October 16, the United States State Department approved a potential sale of L3Harris portable radio equipment and related technology to the Netherlands. The approval, valued at USD 1.42 billion, paves the way for the Netherlands to upgrade its military communication systems.

The proposed sale includes the potential purchase of five types of L3Harris radios, along with walkie-talkies, communication devices, network encoders, and essential logistics support. If finalised, the equipment would enhance the Netherlands’ defence capabilities, improving communication and coordination.

Among the items under consideration are advanced multiband networking radios such as the AN/PRC-117G and AN/PRC-160, along with wideband handheld radios like the AN/PRC-152A. Multi-channel handheld AN/PRC-163 and manpack AN/PRC-167 radios are also included in the approved package.

As L3Harris’s technologies align with NATO standards, the potential sale is expected to enhance the Netherlands’ interoperability with NATO allies. The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency highlighted that the proposed upgrade would strengthen military collaboration within the alliance.

This approval follows a November 2023 announcement by the Netherlands Armed Forces selecting L3Harris Technologies to provide radios for its Military Transmission Building Block (MTBB) project. This communications overhaul involves the potential installation of new combat net radios on approximately 8,000 vehicles, 3,500 personnel, 135 naval vessels, and 170 aircraft, in a deal valued at USD2.5 billion.

While the sale has not been finalised, the approval marks a significant step forward in the defence partnership between the US and the Netherlands. If completed, it would play a key role in enhancing military readiness and communication efficiency for the Dutch Armed Forces.
