Nordic countries strengthen defence cooperation with unified ammunition certification

By Defence Industry Europe

Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Norway have signed an agreement to harmonise their ammunition certification processes. The goal is to enable joint procurement and improve security of supply across the Nordic region.

This decision is part of the deepening Nordic defence cooperation, aimed at enhancing interoperability among their armed forces. A unified certification process will simplify future acquisitions and ensure compatibility between the countries’ military systems.

The agreement builds on previous Nordic defence initiatives. In 2023, the four nations signed an agreement for coordinated ammunition procurement to support Ukraine, placing an initial joint order for artillery ammunition worth 604 million Swedish kronor.

Sweden and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) led the negotiations and coordination of the procurement through existing framework agreements. The new certification arrangement further strengthens this collaboration, ensuring greater efficiency in future defence acquisitions.

Director General Olli Ruutu from the Finnish Ministry of Defence signed the document on behalf of Finland. The initiative underscores the commitment of Nordic countries to closer defence integration and enhanced operational readiness.
