By Defence Industry Europe

The U.S. Department of State has given the green light for a potential sale of AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) to Norway. The Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced the estimated cost of this future contract, which includes missiles and related equipment, to be USD 1.94 billion.

According to the DSCA, Norway intends to deploy the procured AMRAAM missiles in its NASAMS air defense systems. However, the interceptors could also be used with the F-35A fighters of the Norwegian Air Force.

As reported by Defence Industry Europe, the Norwegian government signed a contract with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace in January 2024 for new NASAMS air defense systems. This contract, valued at NOK 1.4 billion, includes new launchers and Fire Distribution Centers but does not cover interceptors.

The DSCA stated that the U.S. Department of State has approved the sale of 300 AMRAAM missiles, 20 guided sections, and related equipment and services, including logistical support.

“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by enhancing the security of a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) ally that contributes to political stability and economic progress in Europe,” the DSCA said in a statement.

The AMRAAM missiles are manufactured by the American defense giant RTX.
