Serial deliveries to the Bundeswehr are scheduled to ramp up in early 2027, while German production will increase gradually from the same year. Patria is working with KNDS and other German industrial partners to establish the local manufacturing capacity required for the programme.
The production plan includes the transfer of armoured vehicle manufacturing expertise from Patria to its German partners. Technology transfer is a central part of Patria’s business model and is intended to establish local capabilities for vehicle production and support.
“We are pleased to confirm this partnership with KNDS, which will provide significant added value for Germany and create local employment at KNDS and in its supplier base,” said Jussi Järvinen, Patria’s Executive Vice President of Protected Mobility. “This contract demonstrates that the German industry is capable of delivering the self-evident high quality, while also providing the cost-effective local production required by the CAVS programme and supporting the European defence manufacturing capacity.”
The CAVS programme was launched by Finland and Latvia in 2020 around the Patria 6×6 armoured vehicle. It has since expanded to include Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany and the UK alongside the two founding countries.
Vehicles have already been delivered in Finland, Sweden, Latvia, Denmark and Germany, while Patria 6×6 vehicles are also operational in Ukraine. The programme remains open to other European and NATO countries with comparable requirements for 6×6 armoured vehicles.
CAVS is structured around joint procurement, coordinated product development and common life-cycle management among participating nations. Patria says the model is intended to allow customers to acquire modern armoured vehicles on a common platform in a timely and cost-effective manner.
The agreement with KNDS advances the German industrial element of the programme before Bundeswehr deliveries move to higher volumes from 2027. It also establishes a framework for increasing local assembly and final integration as Patria transfers production expertise to German industry.
