Portuguese Air Force joins Embraer and Brazil in KC-390 ISR Millennium capability study

By Defence Industry Europe

The Portuguese Air Force has officially joined Embraer and the Brazilian Air Force in a collaborative study to explore the adaptation of the KC-390 Millennium aircraft for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions. The announcement was made during a ceremony at the LAAD Defence & Security exhibition, attended by senior military and industry leaders.

A concept image of the ISR mission system—designed as a modular roll-on/roll-off capability—was unveiled during the event. This solution aims to preserve the aircraft’s existing multi-mission functions while enabling ISR operations.

“The collaborative work with Embraer is evolving efficiently and in a structured manner, allowing for a comprehensive evaluation of the KC-390 Millennium for the current and future needs of the Brazilian Air Force,” said Lieutenant Brigadier Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno, Commander of the Brazilian Air Force. “We see great potential of the aircraft for ISR and maritime patrol missions and welcome the Portuguese Air Force to bring their knowledge and experience to enhance the potential solution.”

Bosco da Costa Junior, President & CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, welcomed the partnership: “We are delighted with the Portuguese Air Force decision to join the studies for this new application for the KC-390 Millennium. Since the beginning of the program, our Brazilian and Portuguese partners have been crucial in making the KC-390 program an undeniable operational and technical success.”

Built with flexibility and advanced systems from the outset, the KC-390 offers strong potential for integrating sensors, mission equipment, and ISR workstations. The study also seeks to align with the operational needs of both the Brazilian and Portuguese air forces.

The KC-390 entered service with the Brazilian Air Force in 2019, followed by Portugal in 2023 and Hungary in 2024. Its operational reliability has been demonstrated through a mission completion rate exceeding 99%.

To date, ten air forces have selected the KC-390 Millennium, including several NATO members. Among the most recent customers are Sweden and Slovakia, who have chosen the aircraft as their next-generation tactical transport solution.
