The surge in applications highlights the growing commitment within the EU defence industry to collaborate on advanced research and development, with a notable 28% increase in proposals from small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and research organisations. Submissions cover all EDF thematic priorities, targeting critical areas such as next-generation armoured vehicles, hypersonic missile countermeasures, and unmanned air and ground systems.
Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age, praised the industry’s engagement, saying, “I am delighted to see the continuously growing interest from the European defence industry to collaborate in the context of the European Defence Fund. At a time when European defence readiness is paramount, it is encouraging to witness the commitment of the defence industry, including an increasing number of SMEs, to build a stronger defence technological base and develop cutting-edge defence capabilities.”
To promote innovation, especially among SMEs, the EDF 2024 call includes dedicated support through the European Defence Innovation Scheme (EUDIS), with €225 million allocated under the 2024 Work Programme. This initiative is part of the Commission’s broader efforts to foster inclusivity and drive technological advancement in the defence sector.
The Commission will now conduct an extensive evaluation process, beginning with admissibility and eligibility reviews, followed by an assessment of scientific excellence, award criteria, and ethics compliance with support from independent experts. The evaluation results are expected to be released in May 2025, ensuring EDF funding is directed toward projects that enhance Europe’s defence capabilities and technological competitiveness.
