The Unity contract represents a cohesive approach to reactor design, manufacturing, and in-service support, enhancing efficiency and collaboration between Rolls-Royce and the MoD. This comprehensive deal is expected to deliver better outcomes for the UK Royal Navy while creating thousands of highly skilled jobs across the country.
The scope of the contract covers continued support for the Royal Navy’s operational submarine fleet, as well as the build and commissioning of Dreadnought Class submarines. It also signals the start of support for the SSN-AUKUS programme, further underscoring the UK’s commitment to its at-sea nuclear deterrent and the Defence Nuclear Enterprise.
This is the first contract of its kind between the UK government and industry, setting a precedent for a more integrated way of working. Unity also aims to ensure that national security remains a central pillar of the government’s agenda, highlighting a long-term investment in defence capabilities and workforce development.
Steve Carlier, President of Rolls-Royce Submarines, expressed pride in the partnership, emphasising the importance of collaboration in meeting the evolving needs of the Royal Navy. The contract enables Rolls-Royce to strengthen its capabilities, invest in skills, and ensure the security of the UK during uncertain global times.
Defence Secretary John Healey MP praised the agreement as a boost to British business, jobs, and national security. He highlighted its alignment with the government’s defence industrial strategy and its role in fostering economic growth while providing value for taxpayers.
Unity will create over 1,000 new roles within Rolls-Royce Submarines, primarily in Derby, alongside new satellite offices in Glasgow and Cardiff. The initiative also nurtures home-grown talent and strengthens the UK’s nuclear expertise, which is critical for both defence and civil industries.
Additionally, the contract benefits the UK supply chain by fostering long-term strategic relationships and increasing competition. Sir Chris Gardner KBE, CEO of the Submarine Delivery Agency, hailed the deal as a key milestone, promoting resilience, collaboration, and efficiency within the Defence Nuclear Enterprise.
